Where to Now For July 2024 SASSA Grants?

Where to Now For July 2024 SASSA Grants?

Where to Now For July 2024 SASSA Grants? It’s bizarre to think that July 2024 SASSA grants will be the first disbursed in the second half of 2024. Plus, with a government of national unity on the horizon after 29 May’s historic no-majority vote, there are arguably more questions than answers around the resolution of July 2024 SASSA grants.

As anyone on South African Social Security Agency welfare knows, SASSA grants increased by a below-inflation 4.8% back in April 2024. Likewise, most are set for another nominal increase in October 2024 by a further R10. However, we’d be remiss to simply assume those would go ahead as planned by the Department of Social Development. Because a new government may slash grants by then to save money. Similarly, it may increase some grants and lower others. Only time will tell.

July 2024 SASSA Grants Overview

Nevertheless, with this month’s R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants still to go ahead from Tuesday 25 June to Sunday 30 June 2024, our attention now shifts to July 2024 SASSA grants. As Stats SA so expertly delineated just prior to the elections, out of 62 million citizens, here’s how July 2024 SASSA grants will be spread across recipients:

  • 4 million to Older Persons
  • 13 million for Childcare (across three grants)
  • 1 million Disability and War Veterans

Currently, social welfare accounts for 3.6% of the country’s GDP. Stats SA confirms that one out of every two households receives a social grant of some sort (including R370 SRD). Furthermore, many of these homes are effectively run by a female elder in the community, which has three or more generations living under their roof. Therefore, the old-age pension grant is actually feeding multiple mouths each month. Plus, Eskom’s 2024 electricity hike by 12.8% has left people even more out of pocket than usual.
