16 New TVET College Campuses Are Coming
A report on the project to introduce 16 new TVET College campuses in the country was provided by Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, during the National Assembly. To improve access and success in the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system, the department embarked on this project.
As part of the department’s efforts to expand TVET, 16 new TVET campuses have been developed and refurbished for a total investment of R2.88 billion.
The first 10 campuses were completed and ready to welcome students at the beginning of the year. Some of these include:
- Thabazimbi
- Umzimkhulu
- Graaf-Reinet
- Nongoma
- Msinga
- Aliwal North
- Kwagqikazi
- Ngqungqushe
- Nkandla A
- Bhambanani
Greytown, Strekspruit, and Balfour will be three of the new campuses to be completed in 2023. Enrollment in the remaining three campuses will begin in 2024/25 when the remaining three campuses are complete.
The department has expanded its Centers of Specialization to 34 centers across 20 TVET colleges. Additional investment of R68 million was made to accomplish this.Â
A total of 35 Trade Test Centers are located in 16 TVET Colleges, according to the department. With only one Trade Test Centre (Olifantsfontein) in the country during apartheid, this is a huge improvement.
The department has entered into a number of other partnerships with the private sector. These partnerships provide training and workplace experience to both TVET College students and lecturers.Â
Entrepreneurship hubs have also been established at TVET Colleges. These hubs support students and equip them with the skills to move into self-employment after the completion of their programmes.
